What causes an enlarged prostate?

The prostate gland begins to grow around age 25 and keeps getting larger through adulthood. Eventually this can lead to an enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). About half of men over 50 have it.

An enlarged prostate does not cause prostate cancer. The problem is that it presses on the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body, and slows or blocks the flow of urine.

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate

Over time, BPH can cause:

  • Difficulty starting to urinate
  • A weak urine stream that stops and starts
  • A frequent need to urinate
  • A sudden urge to urinate
  • Dribbling after you finish
  • Waking often during the night to urinate
  • Feeling like your bladder never fully empties

You may not notice symptoms until the urethra is badly blocked, so do not wait until you cannot urinate at all.

Get urgent care if you suddenly cannot urinate. That needs to be treated right away.

How Rezūm treats an enlarged prostate

Rezūm uses the natural energy stored in water vapor (steam) to shrink excess prostate tissue. Here is what happens.

  1. Before your procedure. Dr. Buschemeyer explains what to expect and talks with you about anesthesia options. General anesthesia is not needed. He may use a local anesthetic and offer a sedative.
  2. During the treatment. He guides the Rezūm device through the urethra to the area where it passes through the center of the prostate.
  3. The steam treatment. The device delivers a nine-second burst of water vapor into the prostate. As the steam turns back into liquid inside the tissue, it releases energy that destroys the targeted cells.
  4. Healing. Over the following weeks, your body’s natural healing response clears away the treated tissue. The prostate shrinks, pressure on the urethra eases, and urine flow improves.

When will I notice results?

Everyone heals at their own pace. Most men begin to see an improvement in urinary symptoms within about two weeks, and symptoms continue to improve gradually over the next three months as your body clears the treated tissue.

In studies, the results of Rezūm lasted up to five years. Your own results can vary, and Dr. Buschemeyer will talk with you about what to expect.

What is BPH?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. It can squeeze the urethra and cause weak flow, frequent urination and nighttime trips to the bathroom.

Do I need general anesthesia for Rezum?

No. Rezūm is minimally invasive and does not require general anesthesia. Dr. Buschemeyer may use a local anesthetic and offer a sedative.

How long does Rezum take to work?

Many men notice improvement in about two weeks, with gradual improvement over about three months as the body clears the treated tissue.

How long do Rezum results last?

Studies show results lasting up to five years. Individual results vary.

Does an enlarged prostate mean I have prostate cancer?

No. BPH does not cause prostate cancer, but the symptoms can look similar, so it is important to be evaluated by a urologist.
